082193 Slay scene clinic beefs up security

At the Florida abortion clinic where Dr. David Gunn was slain five months ago, security was increased yesterday in the wake of the shooting of a doctor outside a Kansas clinic.

"Everyone felt very proud that Dr. (George) Tiller returned to work - that was very courageous," Bianne Dorsey, administrator of Pensacola Woman's Medical Services, said of the wounded Wichita doctor. "But we have to be even more cautious here. One of our doctors was killed."

Dorsey said that she is bracing for more violence at her clinic on Sept. 20, when Gunn's accused killer, Michael Griffith, is scheduled to stand trial.

Cops on duty

As it is, she said, the clinic is equipped with security cameras and Pensacola cops stand guard daily. Doctors and other employes are routinely provided with bulletproof vests.

"When Dr. Gunn was shot, people said this was an isolated case," said Dorsey. "I never believed that. The shooting in Kansas proves it."

The latest clinic attack triggered bitter response from abortion advocates and opponents.

"We deplore that kind of violence," said White House spokeswoman Dee Dee Myers. "It's just reprehensible."

Said Planned Parenthood president Pamela Maraldo: "Since March we have seen a clinic burned to the ground, more death threats against physicians ... and now another doctor shot. We call on the Justice Department to investigate this pattern of violence."

Some anti-abortionists gloated. "The chickens have come home to roost at Tiller's house," said Andrew Burnett, head of Advocates For Life Ministries and co-founder of Operation Rescue. "Tiller is only reaping a very minute amount of the suffering and death he has sown over the years."
