012702 Girl, 14, Is Charged in Her Newborn's Death
            By THE NEW YORK TIMES
14-year-old Staten Island girl has been charged with manslaughter
in the death of her newborn son a month ago, the authorities said
            yesterday.
The medical examiner's office ruled last week that the death was a
homicide, and the girl, whose name has not been released because she
is being charged as a juvenile, was arrested on Friday.
She gave birth about 11:30 on Christmas night, the police said.
Emergency medical workers, responding to a call of someone with
stomach pains, found the girl seated on the toilet, the police said.
When she stood up, the emergency workers saw the baby in the water
and were unable to resuscitate him, they said.
Investigators said they did not believe the girl drowned the baby
deliberately, but they said she did not try to rescue the infant.
