033174 nyt Dublin Contraceptives Bill Would Fine Unwed Buyers
The New York Times
DUBLIN, March 30-Fines o up to $235 could be levied on unmarried persons who buy contraceptives according to legislation
proposed there this week. It would permit Contraceptives to be available only to married couples and to be sold only in pharmacies.
There is no certainty that the bill will pass. Many Deputies and Senators, reflecting the strong Roman Catholic
attitudes of the Republic, are totally Opposed to any sanctioning Of contraception. Last year the Supreme Court here ruled that the 40-year-old anti-contraception act was Unconstitutional,:and it
was largely because of this decision that the new legislation emerged.
It also angered family planning advocates who believe that the law could run into difficulties during attempts to determine whether men and women buying contraceptives were legally married.
