101278 Pro-abortion unit (Peyser, Ottinger) endorses Carey
The Political Action Committee of the Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion has come out in favor of candidates who support what the committee refers to as the "pro-choice" position on abortion.
Released by Polly W. Rothstein, PAC coordinator, the group gave a prochoice rating to Gov. Hugh Carey and his Democratic running mate Mario Cuomo.
The committee said Perry Duryea and Bruce Caputo. the lop of the Republican ticket, were anti-choice" w ahrtia.
As dated by Ms. Rothstein. the pro-choice position is that "abortion should be legal and available." "The government should remain neutral in a woman's decision of whether or when to bear a child, neither coercing nor prohibiting abortions," she said.
The group also gave pro-choice ratings to Democratic congressional candidates Peter Peyser (23rd District). Rep Richard Ottinger (24th District) and Gunars Ozols (25th District) and to Liberals John Hagan and Richard Reyes.
It gave anti-choice" ratings to Republicans Angelo Martinelli. Michael Edelma and Rep. Hamilton Fish Jr., congreesional candidates in the 23rd, 24th and 25th Districts.
In the 35th State Senate District, it gave a "pro choice- rating to Liberal Norman Schneider, a mixed or qualified rating to Democrat Abraham Thompson and an anti-choice rating to Republican incumbent John Flynn.
In the 29th district the pro-choice" candidates were listed as Democrat Michael Kunstler and Liberal Lonnie Barnes. while Republican incumbent Joseph Pisani was rated anti-choice.
In the 37th district all candidates were acceptable. Republican Mary Goodhue, and liberal Robert Posey.
