021779 On Abortion: Human before birth

In Mary McGrory's column Feb. 8 she reported. that Kate Mulhauser, leader of NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League), said, she was "brought up to believe that a baby becomes a human being the day it is `born." If I were brought up to believe a baby appears in a cabbage patch, that doesn't mean it is correct.

A month-old baby human being "if unharmed" will grow Into an adult human being. A human's sperm and a human's egg that have joined "if unharmed" will also grow into an adult human being. In neither case will the being In question grow into a tree, elephant, etc. The being in question Is, and . always will be, human, unless harmed by an older, more powerful human.

Also, Ms. McGrory states that prolifers are predominantly Catholic. Let us grant that statement, although I have no figures, and consider these questions: Should Catholics, therefore, not be permitted to have their say on political issues because they are 'also moral issues?; Should the Catholic Church cease its function of teaching morals such as "Thou shalt not kill", because its members will be disenfranchised on the issue it teaches?; Should a Catholic's rights, as an American, be silenced because he has beliefs formed by his church's teaching rather than by a single's bar conversation or a newspaper editorial?
