Prognosis
The doctors used to say
It was good
(By way of initiation) To let my son play
So early
With hammers and nails and wood,
That I need not be afraid
To bring him along In the tools of my trade.
His, they said, was surely A healthy
inclination.I can't help but feel - Hindsight being twenty-twenty -
That they were wrong In their observation.
They missed plenty That later studies would reveal.
Yes, they saw his bent,
Diagnosed it
And, charging no fee,
Packed up and went.
That's the difficulty
With a single visit.
But to think I would agree With them
And their conviction! Oh, had they only spent More time on the case
And followed him to a later day!
They might have beheld Him astride a donkey Before Jerusalem,
Riding to disgrace With palms in the way!
They might have swelled The crowd at a crucifixion
And seen a Temple curtain rent!
