110901 Staff Development Day = a student's day Off

by LAURA LEFKOWITZ

A day off from school can means different things to different students-, time to catch up on sleep or a (lay to just relax and enjoy their childhood. While many students will still attest that a day without school is a wonderful gift, others will insist that It's just yet another excuse for teachers to bombard students with even more Work.

"We might as well had school (Tuesday) The day off was almost worthless," sophomore Robby Snitkof says unhappily, concerning this weeks day off from school. "So many teachers assigned us so much homework to do."

While most students do not feel hat a day off is "Worthless" per se, most will agree that it is rather bittersweet. instead of having a day of pure fun or, relaxation. lots of work must be done, but it is still a change of pace that allows for a breath of fresh air in their often fast-paced, over-scheduled lives.

"Well, I (did) all the projects that are due at the end of the week as well as (went) to swim practice, admits Fox Lane honors student and swim learn member Brittany Hunter. "But I think it's still good to have (a day off), because it's right before the end of the marking period and everyone is stressed out. I normally would be going to morning practice, then school, stay after school for either driver's ed or a swim meet, then go home to do homework for an hour and a half, go back to practice go home and eat dinner, and then do homework until I go to sleep. I need a break So I think it's a good stress reliever."

The fact that Staff Development Day, the reason for no school Tuesday, comes at the end of the marking period makes it more valuable to those who have felt stressed out in these last days of last minute efforts to raise their grades.

"It is definitely to our benefit to have a day off (on Tuesday)," said junior Meghan Donnelly.

These past few weeks have been so stressful, and it really helps to have a day off to get your act together, and this is the time when most people have to try to get their grades way tip. They can use (Tuesday) as an opportunity for extra work."

While many Students are painstakingly working to make the grade, others; view the break, as "a clay of relaxation," as Fox Laner Zach Gage put it. "I just spent the day talking to people, playing games, reading, fooling around with stuff ."

" You know, nothing too stressful."

Those like juniors Becka Finch and Annie Raftopoulos also saw Tuesday as an opportunity to seize the day and enjoy themselves.

"We went into the city to the Met and had a really good time," said Becka. "it was really good because we really needed a day off from school since we didn't get many in October and the weekends fly by. Junior year is so hard, and once in a while you need a four-clay week to help you get through the month. I was glad to use my time and have fun rather than spend yet another day inside working.
