MEET THE BAUMANN SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS SCHOOLS |
Pushing Sad Depressing material onto young impressible students. Dear Parents, As a sixth-grader your child experienced a two-week unit of study called "Building the Fox Lane Community: A Unit of Understanding. "We focused on topics like the rich diversity of our school, including ethnic and cultural diversity, gender stereotyping, teasing and bullying, and understanding students with disabilities. This program was considered an overwhelming success by all who participated. Due to the success of the 6th grade program, curriculum was developed for a seventh grade strand called, "Building the Fox Lane Community: The Individual's Responsibility." This program was piloted last year and was again received by students and staff with great enthusiasm. This unit will be delivered in social studies classes over a two-week period. Students will acquire an understanding of the role each individual plays in his and her school community. Topics and important skills regarding peer pressure, respect for self and others, leading vs. following will be developed. The goal is that each student will feel a sense of power and control to positively influence our school community. Two films that directly demonstrate the power of the individual in his and her community, will be shown. "The Wave" is a short film that depicts the influence a group can have on individuality using World War ll as the theme. The second film is the feature film, "Play It, Forward." This film will be shown on the last day of the unit and is rated PG-13. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these movies please do not hesitate to contact one of us. Character education, learning and practicing the skills to become good citizens, is actively occurring in middle schools across the country. We are proud to say that we have developed a model program, one that we have begun to share with other districts. We believe that each child will learn skills and acquire knowledge that will make good decisions and become even better citizens in their community. Again if you have any thoughts or ideas that you would like to share, we welcome your call.
