SCANDALS

The Public Schools of Westchester County New York

When I first ran for the Bedford School board in 1994, the Budget was $48 Million dollars. Regents test scores and S.A.T.’s were fast declining. The High School  was aging, many classrooms had inadequate lighting, poor if any ventilation, and bathrooms were badly maintained.

This year the Budget is over $70 Million dollars. Classrooms in the High School still have inadequate lighting, and poor if any ventilation, And as the Principal pointed out on the school tour I took recently the original ceiling tiles, furniture and floors since the 1950’s.

To pay for decades of deferred maintenance and neglect, the Facilities Advisory Committee created by this present board is calling for an astonishing $91 Million dollars in new construction, repairs, fees and contingencies.

In  the ten years I have watched the annual Bedford Budgets and bonds process exceed  cost of living and inflation rates and balloon year after year. I strongly feel this year’s proposals have the capacity to literally bankrupt the community.

Another issue of grave importance is the Teacher’s contract. With over 80% of the budget going to wages and benefits any solution to our present crisis lies in it’s negotiation.

Are we going to allow the administration’s candidates another chance to submit to the demands of the Teacher’s Union. Can we expect them to fulfill overdue obligations like replacing the windows at Pound Ridge which have been already paid for twice and have yet to be replaced on their watch after three years?

The time is long overdue to elect a board that will be truly fiscally responsible and best represent the interests of the students.
