Too much spending on frivolous
items
A school district committee reported recently that Bedford's spending is 15
percent higher than any other. 0ur school board president then said that this
number could not be taken at face value without understanding the mitigating
factors, but no such explanation has been forthcoming.
In the absence of any official s6t6ment, I can suggest a number of reasons.
These items have little to do with the basic mission of education:
1. We are the only school system that provides musical instruments for students.
This is a million-dollar investment, not to mention the costs of repair and
replacement.
2. We have attempted to set up and operate our own private school bus company,
with disastrously high costs.". "
3. We are the only school system with an exercise facility that rivals those of
the fanciest spas in the area. "
4. We are the only school system with a world class "rope course," which., is
used by various companies to teach their employees teamwork.
5. We rebuilt the Fox Lane auditorium, at huge cost, and ruined what was -a good
music hall, because of the excessive use of reflective tile on the walls.
The "gentlemen's agreement" is a euphemism for a scheme to limit the
participation of citizens on the school board. It flies in the face of "one man
one vote," and is illegal in our democracy. Vote no.
If you're not enthralled with the way the schools are being operated, then a
good policy would seem to be to throw the incumbents out.
