031795Thank you for your interest in THE GREAT BODY SHOP March 17, 1995 Dear Phil: Thank you for your interest in THE GREAT BODY SHOP Comprehensive Health and Substance Abuse Prevention Curriculum~ K-6. Enclosed are samples of the curriculum and other materials describing the program. The curriculum targets the basic content areas of health education, stresses substance abuse and violence prevention education in every topic area, and has a strong AIDS education track. Child abuse education is included at each grade level. Self protection and self worth are built into the units. THE GREAT BODY SHOP is comprised of four components: the students issues, the teacher's manual, parent involvement, and community interaction. The following is a brief description of each component: The Student Issues: The issues serve as the text of the curriculum. They offer a personal approach to learning in a format designed to grasp the immediate attention of the students. Through the use of a group of multicultural characters, health and safety issues are addressed in the issues in a non- threatening, age appropriate manner. The Teacher's Manual: The teaching material contains detailed lesson plans, weekly substance abuse or violence prevention portfolio activities and homework assignments. there are 40 core lessons per grade level, per year. Each core lesson incorporates four performance objectives which address knowledge, health values, life skills and critical thinking skills. Weekly reinforcement activities are matched to grade level curricula n Science, Math, Social Studies, P.E., Language Arts and Music, for ease in integration. As well, the reinforcement activities target diverse learning styles. The Parent Component: Parents receive a monthly parent bulletin which outlines what students are lean-ting in class each month. The bulletin has suggested discussions, activities, and a reading list on that. month's topic. In addition, many of the weekly homework assignments require family participation. Community Involvement: Through class projects, students are introduced to many aspects of their community, including the health and safety helpers available to them. There are outreach projects and classroom activities which require community members to come into the school to share their knowledge and skills. THE GREAT BODY SHOP is being taught in school districts across the country. In your area North Kingston and Tiverton School districts are using it. Many of these districts purchase the curriculum entirely, or in part, with Drug Free School grant dollars or Tobacco Prevention funds.
