04-29-95 Christe: Spending is out of control
Thank you for the opportunity to offer my response to your endorsement of the, other candidates. To reiterate what we discussed in our meetings, my candidacy represents a conviction that our school system is at a crossroads, financially and academically.
The escalating spending is out of control and in no way assuring a solid academic formation for students. More spending does not translate into more education. The Bedford Central school board needs new advocates to represent parents and taxpayers to be watchdogs for our $51 million system. We can reduce expenditures while increasing academic achievement.
I advocate a "back to basics" curricula. Current trends and pilot -programs devoted to changing children's beliefs, feelings, attitudes, coping skills, etc., need to be reviewed for provable effectiveness before they are employed. Our schools should not be testing grounds.
The school board needs members to negotiate on behalf of the taxpayer and parent, not the teachers' union. The fact that the Bedford Teachers Union president is supporting the incumbents is very telling, indeed. Who voters elect on Wednesday will be those who negotiate the next contract. Bear in mind that our budget-to-budget increases are essentially due to generous salary increases, -not increased education. Vote for me, Joseph Giardina and Robert Frisch. Don't let the union hold our children as hostages.
