MUSINGS

Dear Parent,

Typically our May/June Fox Lane Association Newsletter is filled with the celebration of our students' accomplishments; many associated with our graduating seniors. I feel it is most important to reserve that edition for our students. For that reason, I am going to take this last opportunity to look back upon the past nine years and reflect upon my 'Bedford Experience'.

We are all framed by our previous experiences and see our surroundings in the context of our own history. Arriving in Bedford, my perceptions and expectations were shaped by over a decade of leading a school three times the size of Fox Lane and not even remotely as diverse in terms of the make-up of the students and the community. My thoughts were towards the wonderful opportunity that I would have to better know my faculty, students, and their parents because of the smaller size. My thoughts were also on my learning curve about diversity In socio-economics and cultures and their impact upon a school. As I arrived, our school was preparing for an upcoming accreditation visit and, unknown to me, the Assistant Chair of the visiting team was an old friend. After two days in our school, he pulled me aside and expressed his concern for the adjustment that I would need to make based upon my background. Well, he was so very right!

What I found was a richness of human resources that marched to a drummer who beat a rhythm of individuality and human caring. I found a belief structure that resisted lock step thinking; that, In contrast, relished the exploration of "new" and "what can be". I also found an institution that was In internal conflict between an older 'rule book' and a practice of disorder. Many people, young and older, had opinions about how to fix the perceived wrongs. A part of diversity also included w general lack of consensus about the goals for the future. It was clear that growth would cause an increase in the number of the student and faculty at the same time, as many long-term veterans would be retiring from teaching. I also found a community that had just received horrible news from Albany about a significant reduction in state aid for Bedford and its schools.

It was a wonderfully challenging scenario that never disappointed me. With the willing support of parents, the (sometimes reluctant) cooperation of the students, and the outright enthusiasm of the faculty and staff, we have walked through the long process of building a consensus. This first manifested itself as agreement on the behavioral structure needed to support the learning environment. Following quickly on the heels of some difficult related decisions and their implementation, the organization of the core curriculum and structure of the students' day began to go through an annual evolution. Expressions such as "tracking", "inclusion", "mainstreaming", "prerequisites", "standards" and "AIS" became the basis of often passionate disagreement. Yet, our program has moved

forward, our quality has Improved, and our core values have become clearer.

In a parallel time frame, we started to become more comfortable with the celebration of the socio-economic, racial and ethnic diversity of our students and staff. Indeed, the diversity has markedly increased within both populations during a time period in which we have become both outspoken about the differences and proactive in addressing the differences. There is an increase in the clubs dedicated to the recognition of the differences as we fly the flags representing the countries of birth of our students and staff, while we have also enjoyed an

increase in the celebrations promoting sharing and understanding of our diversity.

A little understood but very powerful effort took place to recruit, train, and keep new faculty and staff that represent the high academic expectations and improvement-oriented mentality defined by the rich history of our school. This process now regularly includes a large part of the faculty and many students and consumes a great deal of time and energy. Yet, it has produced great dividends because it has allowed a rapidly changing school not only to maintain Its quality, but also to accelerate its improvement.

We have received important validation of improvement and growth. During the journey, our school has led within the Coalition of Essential Schools in the national effort to improve education; `partnered' with the Commissioner to pioneer improved assessment tools; and joined the ranks of the national Blue Ribbon

Schools. These are all based upon demonstrated improvement. The improvement has not been restricted to statistics (though all of our statistics relate to the work of our individual students and mean a great deal); it represents a culture dedicated to "making it better".

No one has ever suggested that we grasp this last phrase as our motto, but a school will never be perfect-with that as a fact, a school could do much worse in its choice of mantras. In many ways, "making it better" underscores much of my `Bedford Experience'. The experience and I have been blessed with having had

the opportunity to be surrounded by many sources of energy. The energy has not been focused on saying no to questions. It has been dedicated to the exploration of ideas of Improvement, while always respecting our previous accomplishments. It has been an unparalleled experience. If a leader is successful, it is in large measure due to the support of all groups. This realization leads me to express my sincere thanks.

Thank you for living the `Bedford Experience' with me.

Richard M. Kraemer, Principal

FOX LANE HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Can we safely say that Spring is really here? I don't know

one person who is sorry to see a bit of sunshine.

Our Town Meeting agenda changed at the last minute,

allowing us exclusive access to Mr. Kraemer. It was well attended

by high school parents, as well as by eighth grade parents and

guardians. It was an enjoyable, informative evening. Rev. Paul

Alcorn organized and posed the questions, allowing all questions

to be answered, even in the abbreviated time frame. The last

portion of the meeting was led by Dr. Bruce Dennis, informing us

of the process and schedule of hiring a new principal. He allowed

us to express our thoughts about the important qualities that we

would want our new principal to possess.

Our Fox Lane High School Association is looking for a

secretary to keep the minutes during our meetings, and an editor

for our 5-6 newsletters a year. Reone Kraemer continued as our

editor even after their daughter, Rebecca, graduated two years

ago! Any parents interested in being on the Steering Committee or

being involved in other positions should fall out the form included

in this newsletter.

We hope everyone will have a wonderful Spring vacation. As

always, please call Pat or me with any questions or suggestions

you may have.

FOX LANE HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
It's Time to Get Involved!!!

The Fox Lane High School Association is the parent affiliation of the high school. We act as a vital support, providing parents with opportunities to become involved and informed about their child's high school experience without interfering in his/her space! Yes, we do provide hospitality for many of the events throughout the school year, but we are much more than just cookie bakers! The school store, student directory, newsletters and scholarship awards are just a few of the things that we do for our students and their families. The various committees are listed below with a description of the tasks involved. Please take some time to review them and consider becoming involved. FLHSA needs you!,

Please circle the name of the committee(s) that interest you, fill out the bottom portion and return this entire form to the address indicated. A member of the current board will contact you. We look forward to hearing from you.

OFFICERS:

Two presidents each serve two-year overlapping terms for continuance. They share responsibilities communicating to all the committees their responsibilities. They set meeting dates and topics and, in general, oversee that the organization is effectively operating. The other officers include a Treasurer who maintains the accounts; a Secretary who takes and produces minutes of the meetings and other necessary correspondence. A Recording Secretary is needed for next year.

STEERING COMMITTEE

This committee consists of parent representatives from each class. These representatives should attend the FLHSA monthly meetings and act as liaison between parents and the school administration. They also help to oversee the functions of the Association as well as assist with hospitality and the Staff Luncheon. Future 9th grade parents are needed for the committee, as well as any parents form the future 10th, 11th and 12th grades.

NEWSLETTER

The newsletter is a vital source of communication between school and parents. A parents editor collects 'articles' of information from the principal, all departments in the high school and from FLHSA. The editor also proofreads and organizes the articles, sets a schedule with the Central Office for printing, collating and distribution, and informs the leaders of the teams of parents who actually do the copying, collating and distribution. An editor is needed, as well as help in all areas.

HOSPITALITY

Two hospitality coordinators oversee a committee that provides refreshments for each grade level meeting, Back-to-School Night, and FLHSA meetings. The also maintain the hospitality closet. We need 2 coordinators and a committee!

LOANS

Two people are responsible for publicizing the availability of loans. Help is needed assisting these people in selecting candidates to receive the loans and follow up on the repayment of loans. The information is computerized.

SCHOLARSHIP

The Association gives two $1,500 scholarships to graduating seniors. The head of this committee distributes and collects nominations and application for this award. A committee of parents and teachers meets in May to select the recipients.

SCHOLARSHIP AND LOAN FUND RAISING

In March, a group of volunteers gets together to contact FLHS parents to raise money for the scholarship and loans program. This is done in the evening and involves a few hours.
