042304 K-L board makes decisions in best interest of schools

To the Editor:

With respect to the upcoming Katonah-Lewisboro school budget vote, it seems useful for all voters to keep the big picture in perspective. Our total quality of life - as well as our property values - hinges on maintaining a high level of quality in our schools. It's why we all moved (or stayed) here in the first place.

Personally, having been here since 1994, I find it alarming to see that the budget has become more politicized in recent years. While I do not consider myself an activist in any way, my following of the budget preparation has convinced me that our budgets are eminently reasonable. Real needs have been addressed with realistic numbers - and without excess.

Opposition to the budgets, by contrast, has been hyperbolic, inaccurate and short-sighted. The process of the budget allows ample room for input. I fully expect more 11th-hour opposition flyers to darken my mailbox. But I trust that this community is smart enough to ignore them.

Our school board is both responsible and responsive. They have made hard decisions in the best interest of the schools, which ultimately is in everyone's best interest. I would urge every resident of the KatonahLewisboro School District to remain supportive of our community by approving the annual budget.
