I am running for the KatonahLewisboro School Board in a special election being held on Tuesday, July 6. With the expansion of the board to seven seats comes an opportunity to add members with valuable expertise.
I am a principal with Towers Perrin, a large management consulting firm. An actuary by training, I specialize in working with companies of all sizes in financing, designing, and administering their employee compensation and benefits programs. I have over 25 years' experience working in this field. Since nearly 80 percent of the annual school budget goes toward compensation and benefits expenses, my expertise will be valuable in the budget and long-range planning process. I can also bring significant knowledge to bear during the contract negotiations with the school administrators (going on currently) and the teachers (negotiations will start in 2005).
Right now, I am working with John Thibdeau (pro bono) to quantify the eventual savings available to the district resulting from the Medicare drug law. Even though the full import of this law is not effective until 2006, there are things the district can do now to maximize the savings available to the taxpayers.
In my job, I work with a diverse range of individuals, both within the firm and with client teams. I believe it is essential for an effective board member to be able to work with all kinds of people. Given how fractured our board has become, I believe this is one of the most valuable skills I bring to the board.
