062504 Letter writers used newspaper to `pillory' board member Dixon

To the Editor:

On June 18, there was a letter that attacked Bob Dixon, a volunteer trustee on the school board. The caption, "Behavior, discourtesy of K-L school board member is troubling" compounded the effect of the letter and concerned ;me.

I am a former trustee in the Bedford school district. I got to know Mr. Dixon in Albany at a New York School Board Association Institute. As a businessman, he accumulated impressive knowledge of general management as well as the need for best practices in financial management. When I called him to see what his reply would be, he said that he could not carve out the time to respond. I would like to point out that this letter was long on rant and

short on facts. In particular, it seemed particularly disrespectful and thereby seemed to discredit its own premise - that people should be respectful. These individuals did not disclose their affiliation but they did nonetheless reveal that they seem to have an agenda to use this paper to pillory Mr. Dixon. Furthermore:

1) They alleged that he somehow limited the number of members on the committee or the makeup of its members when, in fact, this was decided at a regular meeting of the board of education.

2) After due process and finalizing of the makeup of the new committee, Ms. Hundt and Ms. King wanted to reopen the decision of the board. This is counter to rules of order and time wasting. The board already made a decision.

3) They assert that there is not a single member without children, though Mr. Dixon himself constitutes just such an individual, elected by the community to represent their interests.

4) They ask for a written policy to address their grievances, and Mr. Dixon informs me that the board followed existing policy #1210.

Finally, they ask for better manners, and to not allow destructive and disrespectful conduct; here I agree, in that it is Ms. Hundt and Ms. King who need to adhere to these standards.
